N.C. ABC encourages buyback of unused liquor
The measure is yet to be approved by Meck County
The North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control is encouraging its boards to buy back unopened alcohol from restaurants and bars, the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association announced last night.
In a letter to Rep. James Boles, A.D. “Zander” Guy, ABC Chairman, writes “I have received input from many different stakeholders, including the restaurant and bar community as well as representatives of the local ABC Boards. With stakeholders on both sides of the discussion recommending a buyback policy due to these incredibly difficult circumstances, I will rely on their expertise and agree with their recommendation that such a policy would be appropriate during this State of Emergency.”
The Mecklenburg County ABC Board must now agree to buy back unopened products. According to Julia Paul, community outreach director for the Mecklenburg County ABC Board, they have moved up the date of their next meeting to discuss the measure.
“With the latest information from the NC ABC Commission regarding buy-backs, the Board has moved their normally scheduled meeting up to April 14th from April 21st, so that they can address how they can assist the businesses, and, in an orderly fashion,” Paul says.
The move could be a big help to restaurants needing cash on hand right now. When ordering products that aren’t sold in ABC stores, bars and restaurants are required to purchase a full case of it and pay for the order upfront. We’ll keep you posted on the board’s decision. —Kristen Wile
