Opening Thoughts
by Kristen Wile
Within days of welcoming its first guests, Mezzo Market had already become a go-to neighborhood hangout for Plaza Midwood residents, thanks to its indoor-outdoor bar, diverse menu, and inviting interior. Owned by former Intermezzo co-owner Djordje Avramovic and his wife, Carol Austin, the market-wine bar-restaurant hybrid takes over the Segen Food Mart space on The Plaza.
Guests can pop in for grab-and-go fare, including frozen dishes like lasagnas, braised lamb, and soups, to enjoy at home or order at the counter for fast casual service. Pastries are available throughout the morning, with coffee service all day and breakfast sandwiches on weekends. The lunch/dinner menu will feel somewhat familiar to fans of Intermezzo thanks mostly to its pizza and salad selections, but with a more Mediterranean bent and a focus on shared plates. In addition to pizzas, options include salads, grain bowls, sandwiches, and small plates. Standouts include the trio of dips (particularly the muhammara, a walnut and red pepper dip), roasted vegetable grain bowl, and grilled forager pizza.
The menu’s adaptability is in part what makes Mezzo Market such an easy place for guests to visit regularly. At 5 p.m., the patio is packed with families enjoying pizzas and young kids playing on the lawn. Before that time, diners skew more heavily towards folks sitting at the bar with laptops and glasses of wine; later in the evening, tables full of friends amplify the noise level.
The cocktail menu is made up of variations on classics, with several nonalcoholic options as well. The wines are well-selected and well-priced, whether you’re browsing the by-the-glass list or the bottles available in the retail market.
Perhaps the best trait that carries over from Avramovic’s days at Intermezzo is the sense of belonging guests feel when they walk in the doors, a result of the staff’s camaraderie with guests. That camaraderie is what makes a true neighborhood restaurant — and Mezzo Market is certainly that.
