Local farm to host al fresco dinner fundraiser

Two talented chefs will lead the effort

Small City Farm, located on three acres in the northwest part of Charlotte, is the only commercial farm within the city limits. Owner Kim Shaw had a kitchen garden while working at Longview Country Club. Her passion for growing fresh produce led her to set up a garden at her home in Cotswold with her partner, Rohan Gibbs. This passion led them to purchase their current farm, and expand the hobby into a business.

Small City Farm has a spring/summer CSA, and an eight-week fall CSA. They also sell produce to local chefs and restaurants. The farm has a chicken flock that produces eggs most of the year. As the CSA sales have grown, Shaw and Gibbs realized that they need a small building where they can clean and bag their CSA produce and eggs, and to refrigerate produce during the hot months.

When the need for an additional farm building became clear, Shaw asked chefs she works with often to help put on a fundraiser. Shaw loves beautiful tablescapes; a few years ago she purchased an Edwardian, silver-plated Lilyta Art Nouveau service set designed by Thomas Lasher made in 1909. She also collects beautiful hand stitched napkins and table linens. She’ll use the tablescape collection as the setting for a ticketed dinner for 20 on the farm, hoping to raise enough funds to build the necessary storage building.

Local chefs Ben Philpott (private chef) and Ashley Boyd (300 East) have designed the menu based on what will be available on the farm when the event takes place on July 16. There will be ten curated courses with beverage pairings by Stephen Johnson of Para. Dinner will be served under the stars, on the farm in the city.

As of publication time, there are 11 tickets remaining. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite. Tickets cost $200, plus gratuity.
