The second location of popular Plaza Midwood craft brewery Legion Brewing is open in SouthPark today for its soft opening. The 12,000 foot space is in the Capitol Towers building, and the two-story space is accented by the building’s signature domed ceilings above the brewing equipment. The opening marks the first brewery in SouthPark, which is hard to believe given the city’s rapidly growing craft beer scene.

The brewery is starting off with a strong menu, cooked by executive chef Gene Briggs, who was the chef at Blue in Uptown before the restaurant’s closure last summer. The menu fits Legion’s vibe well, with North Carolina-inspired snacks, burgers, pizzas, and entrees, most utilizing a wood-fired grill. The addition of entrees is a smart move, and will likely help adapt the craft brewery to SouthPark’s eating style.

The menu includes a lot of things we’re itching to try, including the pretzel with Legion beer cheese (who doesn’t love a pretzel and beer?), the pork and beans (also made with legion beer, as well as barbecue pork belly), and the three-meat, house-ground burgers. Vegan diners will be excited to hear that Legion also has the Impossible Burger on its menu, as well as a portobello mushroom substitute for its sandwiches.
