Legion Brewing, Great Wagon Road release whiskey
The single malt whiskey has a beer-like mash bill
Great Wagon Road Distilling is collaborating with Legion Brewing to release a single malt whiskey. The whiskey is called Dark Side, and will be released on Dec. 16 at Legion Brewing’s SouthPark location in honor of the brewery’s third anniversary party.
The whiskey was distilled at Great Wagon Road in lower South End, then aged for six months in new, charred American oak. The mash bill contains two-row barley, oats, chocolate malt, caramel malt, and roasted barley — the same ingredients that are used to brew Legion’s Path to the Dark Side beer. The resulting whiskey has vanilla and caramel notes, according to Great Wagon Road distiller Ryan Waters, with a smooth, chocolate finish.
“The blend of malts in this oatmeal stout wash brings forth a really complex flavor portfolio that really lends itself to the whiskey,” Legion owner Phil Buchy said in a release announcing the collaboration.
The whiskey is 92 proof, and will not be available to purchase by the bottle. It will be poured by the glass neat or on the rocks at the brewery’s SouthPark location only, while supplies last. 120 bottles of Dark Side were made. —Kristen Wile
