East Boulevard mainstay restaurant 300 East has a reputation for a stellar dessert program thanks to Ashley Bivens Boyd, the restaurant’s longtime pastry chef and daughter of the restaurant’s founder, Catherine Coulter. The dessert program nearly transcends the restaurant itself, bringing fine dining-worthy dishes into a casual dining room.
Boyd has shared her talent, mentoring many of the city’s top talents in pastry while helming the dessert program at 300 East, including Miranda Brown (now at The Asbury) and Ashley Anna Tuttle (now at Community Matters Café).
Boyd, who long held the title of the restaurant’s pastry chef, has recently taken a bigger picture role at her family’s restaurant. In need of someone to step in and oversee the dessert program, 300 East has named former pastry sous chef Laney Jahkel-Parrish as pastry chef. See the announcement, which Boyd posted on Facebook, below.
Jahkel-Parrish has a palate for innovative flavor combinations and an eye for detail, along with an inspiringly positive personality. She once did a tomato (!) popsicle for a tomato-themed event at South End Market that was so good I had to rush one home for Jon to try. We’re excited to see what she has in store for 300 East. —Kristen Wile
