Cupcrazed Cakery owner and founder Heather McDonnell has sold the business to Wendy Shanahan, the founder of food public relations and marketing firm Asterisk Creative. The business went up for sale in January, as reported by the Charlotte Business Journal, including locations of Cupcrazed in Fort Mill’s Baxter Village and off of Park Road. The Park Road location has since closed, and McDonnell plans to move to Charleston.
Kristin McCubbin and Kaylie Ledderman will remain on the staff as general manager and assistant general manager, respectively. New to the team is Jamie Turner of Jamie’s Cakes and Classes. With help from Turner, Shanahan can add wedding cakes and custom cakes to the bakery’s offerings. Turner is one of the founding Soul Food Sessions members and pastry chef at Earl’s Grocery. Ann Marie Stefaney was originally hired to oversee day-to-day operations, but that arrangement did not work out.
The bakery will continue to make popular flavors of its cookies and cupcakes, with new flavors and sweets being added in the coming months. Current production of Cupcrazed is about 5,000 cupcakes a week, according to Shanahan. —Kristen Wile
