Custom cake shop Craft Cakes has moved its cake studio into Brevard Court in Uptown, where customers can now grab cake by the slice and cake cups during operating hours. The new shop, a second-story space with wood floors and exposed brick walls, will enable Craft Cakes owner Brigitte Oger to increase her capacity of custom creations, including birthday cakes and wedding cakes.

As her business has grown, Oger found herself having to turn down cake commissions due to a lack of space in her former shared kitchen in Plaza Midwood.

“I figured if I’m ever going to grow, I have to stop declining orders,” she says.

Oger is known for her elegant creations that are often decorated in deep tones with natural elements like citrus, flowers, or greenery. In her former space, she maxed out at 10 orders per week. Now, in addition to being able to create more cakes, Oger and her team are able to sell cake slices and cake cups, made using cake trimmings. The bakery will be open for walk-up orders Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“The retail is mostly just a way for people to try our cake if they want to or just have a small dessert,” Oger says. “There isn’t really an intention of it growing into like a large scale bakery.”

In addition to her own offerings, Oger will sell a few items from former kitchen mate True Flour, known for vegan brownies and rice crispy treats.

The cake slices won’t be the watercolor works of art Oger makes for special events, but a chance to try a rotating flavor in a more simple presentation. Eventually, Oger plans to increase same-day cake offerings, allowing folks in Uptown to pop in and pick up a whole cake for an office celebration or to take home with them. Currently, cakes can be ready in a few hours.
