20-Buck Bottle: Don’t overlook canned wine

This refreshing white will surprise you

Companion Wine Co. Savvy B 2019 Sauvignon Blanc, Edna Valley, CA

Available at: Foxcroft Wine Co.
Price: $ 8.99/375 ml.

On the nose: Lemon zest, fresh mowed grass, honeysuckle
On the palate: Crisp, dry, and refreshing, with notes of d’Anjou pear
On the plate: Pair with a mixed greens salad, Caprese salad, smoked trout, or asparagus

Our take: The can yields two 5-ounce pours, the average pour of by-the-glass wines in restaurants. Don’t drink it too fast! It is 12.5% alcohol, not 6% like most beer.

Interesting fact: Winemakers are trying all types of packaging to keep their wines fresh and lower the rate of breakage and “corked” wines (which happens to about 10 percent of wines), reduce the weight of a case in order to reduce the cost of shipping, and insure that wine is your beverage of choice for a picnic, beach day, or camping trip. Many winemakers are very savvy environmentalists; the can is a great choice, since almost all U.S. recycling programs still process aluminum, but many have stopped accepting glass as it is too expensive to repurpose. Keep an open mind – the pull of the tab kind of sounds like the pull of a cork.
