Chefs uniting to host pay-what-you-can meal

The event will be held Aug. 18 at Camp North End

A group of local chefs are coming together to serve a pay-what-you-can family-style meal on August 18 at Camp North End, with tickets ranging from $20 to $120. Guests are asked to purchase the ticket price they can afford, with all of the proceeds benefiting Heal Charlotte, the same nonprofit Unpretentious Palate is working with for our Heal Meals series. The idea behind the dinner is to bring together a diverse intersection of the city to dine together.

Called Community Feast, the event was inspired by a recent James Beard Foundation summit at Haymaker. Clark Barlowe shared his hope that more restaurants would join him in offering a pay-what-you-can dish on their menus. Following the summit, chef Greg Collier, owner of The Yolk, started reaching out to chefs to participate. Most of the city’s biggest names in food were eager to participate. Writer and baker Keia Mastrianni and J. Leigh Events are helping to organize the event.

Participating chefs include Collier, Barlowe, Mastrianni, Joe Kindred (Kindred Restaurant and Hello, Sailor), Bruce Moffett (Moffett Restaurant Group), Jamie Lynch and Whitney Thomas (5Church), Michael Bowling (Soul Food Sessions and The Hot Box), Ashley Bivens Boyd (300 East), and more. You can see the full list on the event description.

Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite; the $20 and $40 price levels have already sold out. Read more about Barlowe’s effort to broaden restaurant access at Heirloom here. —Kristen Wile
