20-Buck Bottle: An aromatic white wine from ancient grapes

A good example of the ever-increasing popularity of Croatian wines

by Anita Skogland

2023 Ikons, Voštinić—Klasnić Winery, Moslavina, Croatia

Available at: The Culture Shop, Belmont
Price: $21.00

On the Nose: Ripe apple, honeysuckle, white flowers, peach
On the Palate: Ripe summer fruit, orange peel, balanced acidity, medium finish
On the Plate: Roast chicken, hearty vegetable salads, trout, pasta with pesto, potato kugel

Our Take: It is always exciting to taste a wine that is made from indigenous grapes from a region not familiar to many Americans. This wine is very similar in aroma and palate to Viognier.

Fun Facts: Made from 50% Skrlet/50% Grasevina grapes. The local grape Skrlet was planted at this family-owned winery in 1936 and has thrived. The winemaker uses only native yeasts, stainless steel tanks, and organic practices. The winery is located inland from Zagreb at 500 ft. elevation. Croatia makes some delicious, small production wine from native grapes, which are starting to get more US distribution.
