Q&A: Underrated new spots, mashed potatoes
Each week, we answer questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: Is there anywhere to get an English afternoon tea in Charlotte?
Kristen: The only place I know of that’s doing them is The Ballantyne Hotel, which offers tea Thursday-Sunday when the holiday season hits and on the weekends until then. A reader recently suggested the drive to Ridgeway, South Carolina to check out Laura’s Tea Room. “You get hot and iced tea, soup course, and a full sandwich/dessert tower,” according to UP member Chelsey. “You also get to pick a fun hat to wear during your experience, and you select your favorite cup & saucer from a large assortment! I highly recommend this as a little half-day trip.”
Q: Where can you find the best mashed potatoes and gravy?
Kristen: 300 East! I had them recently and they were near perfection. If you’re looking for classic, check out Dish in Plaza Midwood. For a splurge, the buttermilk whipped potatoes at Steak48 are fantastic. If you’re looking to sample all of the best, don’t miss Lupie’s Cafe’s mashed potatoes, either, served only on Mondays. For something a bit different, try the smashed potatoes at Cajun Yard Dog.

Q: What’s your pick for the most underrated, semi-recently opened spot?
Kristen: Fairweather! It’s fantastic, but its opening has gone under the radar. Read our opening thoughts on the restaurant.
