This versatile wine can hold up to winter fare
by Anita Skogland
2021 Chateau de Manissy Tavel Cuvee des Lys, Provence, France
Available at: Rhino Market, Wesley Heights
Price: $23.99
On The Nose: Ripe raspberry, orange, white rose, cherry
On The Palate: Medium+ body with mineral notes, a bit of forest, hint of honey, long finish, floral notes, more raspberry
On The Plate: This wine is so versatile — pair it with a very hearty winter kale and persimmon salad, a cheese omelet, pasta with pesto, roast chicken, pan fried salmon with fennel, simple pork loin
Our Take: While this wine is a little over our projected price range, it is worth every penny.
Fun Fact: Peter Weygandt of Weygandt-Metzler is an importer whom I have known for years. He is phasing out of daily work and his daughters are taking over most of the importing operations. Peter is smart, low-key, focused, cordial, and a solid person who is admired and trusted by his European partners. Once he sponsors a wine for import to the U.S., he becomes embedded in the winemaker’s business and supports their wines for years. He is in the same league as Kermit Lynch and Rosenthal. If you are searching for a wine in a local wine store, do not hesitate to purchase a wine from any of these three importers as they represent the best of the best.
