20-Buck Bottle: Refreshing white that will surprise you

Forget the pinot grigio and give kerner a try

2018 Castelfeder Kerner

2012 Castelfeder "Lahn" Kerner Trentino-Alto AdigeAvailable at: Foxcroft or winestore (special order)
Price: $20.99

On the nose: Fresh lime, apricot, hint of mango

On the palate:  Light body, crisp acidity, pineapple, tarragon

On the plate: Delicate fish or seafood dishes, asparagus, butter lettuce salad

Our take: If you enjoy sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio, you will enjoy the kerner grape. It has a beautiful light gold hue.

Fun fact: The Castelfeder vineyards and winery are located in the Dolomites, in the South Tyrol region of Italy. This area has more in common with Germany and Austria than Italy. The property is owned by the third generation of the Giovanett family. The grapes are grown at high altitude (about 3500 feet) with a short growing season, which is why the acidity is high. The kerner grape is a cross of riesling and trollinger.
