20-Buck Bottle: Crisp, dry Italian white wine

A great substitute for Pinot Grigio

Azienda Santa Barbara Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi 2018

    Availability: Foxcroft Wine Co.
    Price: $15.99

On the nose: Green notes, lime zest, fresh

On the palate: A light spritz, dry, chalky

On the plate: Pair this with simple foods like lemon risotto, white fish with salt and pepper, or a green salad

Our take: This is a well-made wine from importer Kermit Lynch, and a decent value

Interesting fact: Jesi is a 14th century town in the Le Marche region of central, eastern Italy, along the Adriatic coast. Verdicchio grapes have been growing in this region for centuries. Have you seen the pale green, fish-shaped bottles of white wine from Italy? That is also Verdicchio. Those bottles were considered a detriment to promoting the quality level of this wine, and went out of favor 10 to 15 years ago. However, the desire for nostalgia and comfort has some producers considering their use again.
