Affordable red blend with lots of red fruit notes with a long finish

by Anita Skogland

2019 Intensus Vinho Regional Alentejano Reserva, Portugal

Available at: The Wine Vault, Elizabeth/University City
Price: $21.99

On the Nose: Cherry, red rose, mocha, thyme
On the Palate: Well-balanced tannins, blackberry, cherry, long finish, full body
On the Plate: Great with grilled items such as eggplant, lamb, sausages, pork chops, and plant-based burgers; also pairs well with lasagna

Our Take: Solid red to please many palates at a decent price

Fun Facts: Blend of Aragonez, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouchet grapes. 14% ABV. Winemaker Rui Reguinga was born into a grape growing family. After formal studies in winemaking and a masters in wine marketing, he studied in Bordeaux and Champagne, then returned to Portugal to study with top wine producers there. He returned to his family estate to make award wining wines, using grapes native to Portugal. He is a frequent judge at wine contests throughout Europe. Stay on the lookout for wines from Portugal – they are very affordable and food friendly. Many producers are small so they don’t get the distribution that they deserve, but the market is changing.
