20-Buck Bottle: Biodynamic red wine from Spain

A surprisingly good red from a little known grape, Souson

Coto de Gomariz The Flower and The Bee, Ribeiro, Spain

    Availability: Laurel Market
    Price: $19.99

On the nose: Ripe black cherry, cola, smoke, black pepper
On the palate: Blackberry, balanced minerality and tannins, long dark fruit finish
On the plate: Grilled meats, scalloped potatoes, vegetable kebabs

Our take: Very pleasant find, great quality. It’s refreshing to see local, native grapes in an international portfolio.

Interesting fact: Galicia, where Souson is grown, mostly cultivates white wine grapes. It is located in northwest Spain, just north of Portugal. Richard Correiro, the wine maker at Coto de Gomariz, is reviving the local native grapes that have been overshadowed by international favorites. He uses sustainable farming practices to grow enough grapes to reintroduce these wines to your dining table — only 1,250 cases of this wine were produced.
