20-Buck Bottle: A surprising German white Pinot Noir
A white wine with red fruit notes
by Anita Skogland
2021 Paul Anheuser Blanc de Noir, Nahe, Germany
Available at: Foxcroft Wine Co., multiple locations
Price: $19.99
On the Nose: Delicate stone fruit, a hint of forest, cherry
On the Palate: Hints of raspberry and cherry with balanced acidity
On the Plate: Pan-sautéed halibut or cod, cold smoked Norwegian salmon, goat cheese with chives, roasted beets, green lettuce salads, lentils
Our Take: As Germany’s growing season gets longer, more pinot noir is being planted. Called “Spatburgunder,” it is a very delicate style, but definitely has the aroma and flavor of a Burgundian Pinot Noir. A nice surprise at an affordable price.
Fun Facts: Extracting white juice from red skinned grapes takes practice. This process has been used for hundreds of years in Champagne, where two red skinned grapes are used to make what is mostly a white wine. Those grapes are pinot noir, pinot meunier, and chardonnay. This winery dates back to 1627 and is currently run by the 14th generation of Anheusers. If the name seems familiar, it is because in 1842, two brothers from the 10th generation moved to St. Louis and founded Anheuser-Busch brewery.
