20-Buck Bottle: A natural wine from Mendocino

An organic, biodynamic red from old vines

Sans Wine Co. 2020 Carignan, Mendocino, CA

    Whole Foods, $16.99

On the nose: Dark cherry, fresh and bright, spring flowers
On the palate: Dark red, medium body, hint of spritz, warm spice, well-integrated tannins
On the plate: Burgers, mushroom casserole, stuffed eggplant, falafel

Our take: Natural wines are a growing trend – no filtration, no fining, native yeasts, no added sulfites. The “natural,” minimalist approach seems to fare better with red grapes than white.

Fun fact: The young couple who started Sans Wine Company are dedicated to making minimalist intervention wines, and are using various types of wine packaging, including cans and boxes, in order to have a low environmental impact and to keep their wines as fresh as possible.
