20-buck bottle: A food-friendly Italian red
A robust Piemonte Barbera from Common Market
Wine: Franco Serra Barbera d’Alba
Available at: Common Market, Oakwold
Price: $14.99
On the nose: Bright dark cherry, blueberry, white pepper, cinnamon, a hint of cedar
On the palate: Medium+ body, balanced tannin, a note of cigar, balanced alcohol, dark fruit flavors
On the plate: There is enough complexity to pair this wine with roasted pork and apples, venison, simple rib eye, or lasagna.
Our take: This producer has been making wine in the Piedmont of Italy for more than 60 years. It is more robust than many Barbera d’Alba wines. It is not aged in oak, which allows the bright ripe fruit flavors to shine. Open now or age for a year or two. Good value. —Anita Skogland
