Sugar Shock returns for its fourth year

The dessert event raises money for Project 658

Sugar Shock has become a must-attend evening for dessert lovers in Charlotte. Now in its fourth year, the event brings together some of the city’s top pastry chefs to create a multi-course meal made entirely of dessert (with some savory apps to start the event).

The event was founded by Jossie Lukacik, owner of Sweet Spot Studio and Sweet Affairs cakes. She started volunteering at Project 658, and decided to put together the fundraiser to help support the faith-based nonprofit’s mission to provide help and education to neighbors in need.

This year’s dinner is six courses, not including the passed appetizers provided by chef Philip Platoni of Southminster. Among his bites are an open-faced Cubano, an oyster mushroom risotto cake, and jerk shrimp.

The pastry chefs taking part in the event along with Lukacik are Ashley Anna Tuttle of Community Matters Café, Miranda Brown of The Asbury, Brigitte Oger of Craft Cakes CLT, Alyssa Wilen of Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen, our own Justin Burke-Samson, and Samantha Allen of Wentworth & Fenn. Kel Minton of Soul Gastrolounge and Tamu Curtis of Liberate Your Palate will provide cocktail pairings with each course.

Some of the dishes we’re looking forward to most are Brown and Lukacik’s caramelized white chocolate, vanilla bean, lemon, and parsnip course, as well as Oger’s passionfruit, pistachio, and meringue creation.

It may seem like a lot for one night, but none of the courses are overly sweet, making six courses of dessert go down easy. (Editor’s tip: bring a Tupperware if you’re a light eater.)

Tickets cost $75 and can be purchased here. We’re emceeing the event, so we’ll see you there! —Kristen Wile
