Soul Food Sessions hosting up-and-comer dinner
Eight young chefs will cook for the coursed meal
Since its inception back in 2016, dinner series Soul Food Sessions has worked to bring recognition to black chefs in Charlotte — and it worked. Founding members Jamie Barnes, Michael Bowling, Greg and Subrina Collier, Jamie Turner, and Gregory Williams are now regular names in the conversations around Charlotte’s culinary community. So they’re turning that attention to the next generation with their upcoming dinner.
Soul Food Sessions Presents: Young Gunz will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday night inside 7th Street Public Market. The eight chefs taking part — each cooking a course — are: Anthony Denning, Marketa Lucas, Marlene Barber, Brandon Staton, Daryl Cooper, Chayil Johnson, Oscar Johnson, and pastry chef Jasmine Macon, who will join Collier at his upcoming restaurant Leah & Louise.
The menu lists what we have come to anticipate from these dinners: Southern cuisine from an African American perspective. Dishes include a yam saltine with celeriac espuma, smoked oyster, pickles, and carrot caviar; brown butter potato galette with buttermilk fried carrots, mustard sabayon, and pickled green chow chow; and sunchoke noodles with smoked chicken, potlikker egg, and yock sauce.
Mixologist Sekani Akunyun will pair three cocktails with the meal. Tickets cost $75 per person; purchase them here. —Kristen Wile
