    Q&A: What happened to ramps?

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: I have a coworker getting married in Charlotte. What would be a good restaurant to get them a gift certificate for?
Kristen: Assuming you want this gift to be a special occasion experience, I’d suggest Bardo or Supperland — Bardo particularly if they’re super into food. Another great option would be Counter-, depending on when the wedding is — it will be closed this summer for a while to relocate, but we expect the experience to be even better once it reopens in its new home.

Q: Do you know of anywhere to get Memorial Day cookouts to go like restaurants were doing during the pandemic?
Kristen: Yes, there are a few happening — we’ve got a list in the works. We’ll publish it next week!

Q: Is it just me, or are there fewer ramps on menus this year?
Kristen: No, it’s not just you! We’ve noticed that as well. At our last night at The Stanley, Jon and I asked chef Paul about this, and he said that a lot of it comes down to the current staffing issues. It takes a lot of time to clean and trim ramps, or a lot of extra money to purchase them already cleaned and ready to cook with. With such a shortage of kitchen workers, it’s hard to dedicate that much time to the foraged, onion-like plant.
