Q&A: The election & food, our next event

Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: What will change after the election in the farm and dining scene?
    Tom:
The quick answer is “it’s too early to tell.” We all know there’s a difference between what candidates promise and what they can actually deliver. However, based on former/incoming President Trump’s campaign platform, we can expect large tariffs on all imports (50% or more), so expect serious price hikes on imported wines and spirits, including Scotch, Japanese whiskey, and beloved “bartenders’ handshake,” Fernet Branca. Dot Dot Dot owner Stefan Huebner is advising friends and colleagues to stock up now. You can expect similar hikes on imported cheeses, produce, meats, olive oil, and similar items. On the surface, this could mean good news for U.S. farmers and dairy producers as more restaurants may be more motivated to buy local. However, the likelihood is that high tariffs may result in a global trade war where American meats, cheeses, produce, and artisan foods would become difficult, if not impossible, to sell overseas. There may also be food system impacts stemming from the removal of food inspectors and other agricultural employees from the federal payroll — as well as a large restriction on immigrant farm workers to help American farmers harvest their crops. It all adds up to higher prices at your favorite bars and restaurants — if it all comes to pass. Time will tell.

Q: Attending the 2024 UPPYs was the highlight of my year! Looking forward to your next event. When is it?
    Tom:
In just a few weeks! We conclude our 2024 Meet the Chef series on Monday, December 9 with Andres Kaifer, chef/owner of Customshop in Elizabeth. Look for tickets to go on sale next week.
