Q&A: Small private parties, best Italian hoagies
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: I would like to take a group of twelve people to a special occasion dinner. Who accommodates groups like this and does it best?
Tom: It’s the time of year for special gatherings, for sure. The newly opened Albertine in Uptown Charlotte can handle parties of that size. Also, in Uptown, the “Wine Room” at The Asbury is specifically designed for parties of 10-12. The Fireplace Room at The Fig Tree in Elizabeth can seat up to 14. Private dining in Supperland‘s wine room in Plaza Midwood also seats 12. Just be sure to reserve as early as you can, especially now that we’re in the holiday season.

Q: I’m looking for a really good Italian hoagie. Who’s got one?
Tom: You’re singing my song. I love a good Italian hoagie (or sub, submarine, or grinder, depending on where you call home). Cheat’s (Plaza Midwood/South End) would be my first go-to. They rock an authentic Italian hoagie, down to importing seeded Liscio’s rolls from Philadelphia. It is stuffed with ham, capicola, and salami with all the expected accouterments. Also, a hoagie in everything but the shape of the roll, The Culture Shop’s “Capo” is an Italian Stirato round roll filled with a variety of Italian cured meats and provolone, again with all the expected add-ons. Also, don’t discount the local chain, The Steak & Hoagie Shop. They’ve been churning out quality hoagies of all sorts since 1978.
