Q&A: Orrman’s move, early Top Chef takes

Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Orrman’s Cheese Shop will be moving from Uptown to Selwyn Road the next weeks. TM Petaccia/UP

Q:  What’s the latest on the Orrman’s move to Myers Park?
Tom: From what I’m being told, it’s down to dotting the final i’s and crossing the last t’s before Orrman’s Cheese Shop ends its thirteen-year run at The Market at 7th Street and heads to Selwyn Road, nestled between Sora and The Jimmy. Word just came out that the last day Uptown will be this coming Wednesday, March 25. The official opening date in Myers Park should be announced soon.

Q:  What’s your take on Top Chef so far? Are they showcasing the Carolinas properly?
Tom: Two episodes in, that’s really hard to say. I will say the first two episodes cleared low hanging regional fruits: showcasing our NASCAR speedway, North Carolina’s largest consumable crop in sweet potatoes, and the notorious Carolina Reaper pepper. I’m curious to see how many hidden gem aspects of Charlotte and Greenville, S.C. they showcase in terms of Carolina specialty crops and foods. Will there be a livermush QuickFire or a trip to the fields growing Carolina Gold rice? I’m guessing Cheerwine will show up in there somewhere. We’ll find out soon enough. But from the promotional teaser and the first two episodes, it looks like they have the Carolinas travelogue ascpects covered. So just sit back, get your Anson Mills popcorn ready, and enjoy the show.
