Q&A: Cheese boards, CSAs, and events
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte
Q: I saw something on Instagram about ordering six meals from Freshlist. I looked at the meals and at $480 that is 80 per meal. You share an appetizer and dessert and you get two entrees. That seems expensive to me. It says this is the second season they are doing it. Just wondering if you got this last year and what you thought.
Kristen: We wrote about Freshlist’s restaurant CSA coming back earlier this week! I did do last year’s, and really enjoyed it. The issues I had with last year’s they’ve fixed this year; namely, a few of the restaurants did similar dishes, and the amount of food seemed to vary from week to week. We often order Patrick’s Gourmet or Your Farms, Your Table, which are now $40 per person, and I feel like the value of having locally sourced, restaurant-quality meals delivered is worth the $40 per person as an at-home date night — especially at the time of year when the weather makes staying home even more preferable!
Q: I know things are crazy with Covid-19, but are you bringing back events soon?
Kristen: Yes — at least, that’s the plan. We were ready to bring things back at the beginning of the year, before Omicron hit. If all goes well, we’ll be back with events in March. We’re hoping to kick off a return to events with our Meat & Potatoes dinner. Stay tuned!
Q: I just saw a cheese box from someone on Instagram from @brookesboardsclt. Looks pretty. I don’t see any pricing though. Are you familiar?
Kristen: I haven’t heard of Brooke’s Boards. I have noticed that during the pandemic a lot of cheese and charcuterie side hustles have popped up. I’m a bit wary of getting boards from non-established cheese places, because a lot of the delivery-only ones look like they use big box offerings, and the boards are more about being pretty than having quality product. Ordering from Orrman’s Cheese Shop or The Culture Shop, on the other hand, you know you’ll get high quality, artisan products. Another place to check out for cheese plates is Off The Block, which uses all North Carolina products.
