Get to Know: New Town Farms’ Sammy Koenigsberg
This small family organic farm specializes in rare and heritage breeds
When it comes to eating clean, organic food, we turn to our local farmers to provide us with the best available. That’s why we’re interviewing the people who make eating local a reality, getting to know the folks who grow our food. This week, we interview Charlotte native Sammy Koenigsberg to learn why he’s passionate about his small farm in Waxhaw. With the help of his wife and eight children, he has maintained this organic farm for more than twenty years.

What is your hometown?
Charlotte, N.C.
Do you own any pets?
No, but our dog Leo just passed.
Who are your favorite sports teams?
I don’t have any. I wish I had more time for watching them though!
How long have you been in Charlotte?
54 years.
Tell us about your farm and its specialities.
We are primarily a vegetable farm, growing vegetables according to oOrganic standards and in that thought tradition. We also raise a small herd of an endangered breed hog called Ossabaw, raise turkeys for Thanksgiving, French heritage pastured chickens, and layers for eggs.
Did you have a career before you started farming?
Nope, all I know is farming.
Favorite product to grow/cook?
Definitely carrots.
Most popular product you sell?
Probably either tomatoes or carrots.
What inspired you to start your agricultural business?
I have several reasons, one of which is the environmental degradation of industrial agriculture. It was also a personal health crisis, and struggle to find healthy, clean food. Finally, I noticed a difference of how food is grown with care and craft.
What are your main goals you are hoping to accomplish?
Make locally, well-grown and well-raised foods and thus farming valued in our community, so that it stays as part of our community. Educate and connect people with agriculture so they are willing to support small farms, making them viable businesses. To be a part of building a local food system that makes it easier for young people coming along who desire a life and work on the land.
What do you think the Charlotte agricultural scene needs?
In my opinion, we need more of an agricultural scene.
Where can we find/purchase your products?
The Matthews Community Farmers’ Market.

We love Sammy Koenigsberg and his family and New Town farms. We are big fans of the Matthews Community Farmers’ Market and adore both the food that New Town farms brings and the family care and kindness that Sammy and the family share with all of the customers.
