Amy Fortes competes on Food Network

Fortes is co-owner of The Flipside Cafe

South Carolina chef Amy Fortes competed on the Food Network this week. On Wednesday, was one of four contestants on Guy’s Grocery Games. She won the first round, before being cut in the second. Fortes owns The Flipside Cafe, Flipside Restaurant, and the recently opened Salmeri’s Italian Kitchen with her husband, Jon.

Fortes, who grew up just outside of Buffalo, has embraced the South’s abundance of fresh, seasonal ingredients year-round while still staying true to her Northern roots. The Flipside Cafe, the Fortes’ first restaurant, melds the low-key vibe of a New York neighborhood restaurant with Southern warmth.

Guy’s Grocery Games, hosted by Guy Fieri, combines aggressive grocery shopping with culinary skills. The episode was called “Guy’s Egg-streme Games,” and was themed around eggs. Fortes’ first-round winning dish was a baked egg sandwich with Irish cheddar cheese and avocado. —Kristen Wile
