Serving the Culture, a group of chefs merging culinary arts with hip hop, will host The Wu on Saturday, June 29. The Wu dinner is a nine-course tasting menu with cocktail pairings inspired by the nine original Wu-Tang Clan members and classic Wu-Tang songs.
The five chefs participating in The Wu dinner are: Shelton Starks, Calvin Wright, owner of The Wright Dining Experience; Jamie Barnes, chef/owner What the Fries CLT; Oscar Johnson, chef/owner of Zeal; and Marketa Lucas.
“The Wu dinner is important as far as us paying homage to one of the most unique and talented music groups of all time,” Barnes says. “To be able to express their particular art form through our chosen art form is an honor and pushes us as chefs to tell our story with food through their rhymes and lifestyles.”
The menu for the evening is:
- U-God – salt and pepper youtiao with Mandarin orange, ginger yofu, and seasonal berries
- GZA – beet juice shooter with smoked beet salad and ginger citrus vinaigrette
- Ghost Face Killah – fried red rice topped with PBR beer battered crab croutons and ghost pepper duck sauce
- RZA – purple yam gnocchi with cashew cream, malabar spinach, and nine grain crumble
- Method Man – chilled yuzu and local musk melon consommé, smoked cherries, compressed melon, and lemon balm yogurt
- Ole Dirty Bastard – drunken shrimp with Brooklyn lager, black garlic butter, chili flakes, and herb crostini
- Masta Killah – braised beef, caramelized onions, pickled jalapeños, dirty ketchup, spicy honey mustard, and smoked cheddar cheese sauce on a brioche bun
- Raekwon the Chef – triple chocolate cake, butter pecan cremeux, bourbon chocolate mousse, and salted caramel ice cream
- Inspectah Deck – goat lady creamery cheesecake, meyer lemon curd, strawberry gastric, and honey crystals
Tickets are $100 and available here. The dinner is at Camp North End, from 6:00 to 9:30 pm. Serving the Culture plans to hold a series of hip hop themed dinners throughout the year; The Wu is the kickoff to the series. ––Justin Burke-Samson
