Q&A: Takeout near hospitals; how Bruce Moffett turned chef to celebs
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Big Ben Pub in Elizabeth has a hearty breakfast offering. Kristen Wile/UP
Q: Best eats near the hospitals Uptown? (Especially for takeout to eat in a hospital room)
Kristen: If we’re talking Presbyterian and surrounding buildings, one place constantly overlooked is Plaza Midwood’s Deli Street. You can even call when you arrive to pick up your order in the little-noticed drive-through window. Sabor is dependable and delicious, and of course Cheat’s is not far, either (though everyone in the surrounding area of your sandwich will be jealous from the aroma). Not quite as close, Jasmine Grill recently opened on Central Avenue. On the main stretch in Elizabeth, The People’s Market recently opened, and I’ve gotten takeout from Big Ben Pub for breakfast that has been a great start to the weekend (they open at 10 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays and 11 a.m. weekdays). For something heartier, Mama Ricotta’s has takeout service down. In the same plaza, you can get Maharani if you’re looking for something you won’t find in the hospital cafeteria. Lastly, check out The Market at 7th Street vendors. There’s much to enjoy there, including Mad Dash Kitchen’s burger melt and chicken sandwiches, Sweet Crunch waffles, Mano Bella pastas, grilled cheeses from Orrman’s, and more.
Q: Curious if y’all have done a piece on Bruce Moffett catering J. Lo and Ben Affleck’s wedding. Would love to know how our Charlotte chef (who I love!) got the look for their wedding. J. Lo spent $1m on just one dress and our talented, yet humble chef Bruce oversaw the dinner. How exciting is that?! Anyway, would love to know how that all came together.
Kristen: We were hoping to speak to Bruce about the experience, but unfortunately, he had to sign a tight non-disclosure agreement to take part, so we’ve got nothing we can share. But you’re right, it’s extremely exciting for Charlotte. Bruce has earned the city some serious clout this week between cooking at the wedding of the year and the recent New York Times story on cost increases at Good Food on Montford.
