20-Buck Bottle: Tongue-tickling acidity in this sauvignon

Drink your grapefruit for good health!

    by Anita Skogland

Criterion Sauvignon Blanc 2022, Marlborough, NZ

    Available at: Whole Foods, SouthPark
    Price: $14.99

On the Nose: Granny Smith apple, mineral, lime, orange
On the Palate: Grapefruit, tropical fruit, crisp acidity, mineral and light body.
On the Plate: Pair with buttered sautéed fish, scallops, oysters, Caesar salad, pears with goat cheese

Our Take: The alcohol is surprisingly high for a Sauvignon from this region at 15.5 percent; however, it is well integrated in this very crisp wine. I had a work colleague in New Jersey who liked the racy acidity that New Zealand Sauvignons offer – not sure she has any taste buds left! This wine will certainly brighten up a seafood starter or dinner.

Fun Fact: Marlborough is on the south island of New Zealand. The region has craggy mountains of stone with warm days, cool nights, and a depth of expertise in winemaking. Sauvignon is the main grape grown in this region, with some chardonnay, pinot gris, and riesling.
