20-buck bottle: Delicate sweetness with bracing acidity
This wine is looking for spice
Leitz 2018 Dragonstone Rheingau Riesling
Availability: Whole Foods, Foxcroft Wine Co.
Price: $19.99
On the nose: Gaja apple and Bartlett pear, with a whiff of petrol and lime
On the palate: Clover honey and almond, a bright acidity, and creamy texture
On the plate: This wine begs for heat. Try it with spicy Thai, Korean, or Chinese food, sushi, or roast duck.
Our take: Rieslings at this quality level are often over $25. The delicate sweetness of this bottle will elevate your spicy chicken flavors.
Interesting fact: The Rhine River flows north in Germany, to the North Sea. There is a sharp curve in the river that takes a southwest to northeast path before it straightens out again. The area along this bend is where the Rheingau wine growing region is located. The vineyards are very steep, often requiring the workers to wear ropes tied to poles to keep them from falling down 1,000 feet to the towns along the river. The wines from this region are world-class Rieslings that last for years. —Anita Skogland
