20-Buck Bottle: Balanced Rhone Red

Importer Mary Taylor has a small but impressive portfolio

Pierre Vidal Costieres de Nimes AOC 2018 Rhone, France

Available at: Foxcroft Wine Co., all locations
Price: $17.99

On the nose: Blackberry, blueberry, cinnamon, rosemary

On the palate: Medium body, balanced tannins, dark fruit, hint of soil, medium length finish

On the plate: Pair with roast chicken, cassoulet, eggplant Parmesan, lamb meatballs, quiche

Our take: This wine is a blend of grenache (60 percent), syrah, and mourvedre (20 percent each), which is a typical blend for southern Rhone red wines. It is a flexible wine for casual grilling to elegant dinner party, very balanced and priced just right.

Fun fact: Mary Taylor has built her portfolio of European wines by seeking out growers and producers who make wines that reflect their terroir – or sense of place. The portfolio of 16 wines are all worth trying, from Loire Rosé to Sicilian white.
