20-Buck Bottle: An Italian Tuscan white
A wine from Sting that sings
2017 Roxanne Vermentino, Tuscany, Italy
Available at: Arthur’s Wine Store, Belk, South Park
Price: $12
On the nose: Citrus, fresh cut grass, orange blossom.
On the palate: High acidity, refreshing, summer herbs, pineapple.
On the plate: Pair with white fish, pasta and marinara sauce, asparagus, Vietnamese veggie wraps
Our take: This is a solid white wine with more character and heft than many Vermentinos in this price range.
Fun fact: This winery is owned by Sting – yes, that Sting – and his wife, actress Trudie Styler. It is located on the famous Il Palagio Villa, which was built in the 17th century. The name, Roxanne, is inspired by the female protagonist pursued by Cyrano de Bergerac in a play by Edmond Rostand. It is also the name of a song performed by The Police. (Roxanne was also the name of the wife of Alexander the Great, and some accounts state that she was the inspiration behind the Sting song).
