by Anita Skogland
2018 Petite Syrah, Pedroncelli Winery, Sonoma County, California
Available at: Assorted Table Wine & Shop
Price: $20.99
On The Nose: Pepper, tobacco, plum, chocolate, warm spices
On The Palate: Full body, dark fruit, black cherry, firm tannins, long finish
On The Plate: Pair with grilled sausages, burgers, game meat, and lamb – plus hearty Italian dishes
Our Take: Well-balanced, a good alternative to a decent Cabernet Sauvignon at a more affordable price. This wine can be aged up to ten years.
Fun Facts: The Pedroncelli family has been making wine in Sonoma over four generations, since 1927. The family still grows its own grapes and makes their portfolio wines under the direction of the current winemaker, Montse Reese. 70% of the company is woman-owned. Petite Sirah is not a small version of the syrah grape, but a distinctly different grape with a different lineage. This grape is called Durif in France and is often blended with other red grapes to add body and tannin.
