20-Buck Bottle: A flexible French red
A Beaujolais that is drinkable in any season
Louis Latour Chameroy Beaujolais-Villages 2017
Available at: Whole Foods
Price: $16
On the nose: The enticing ruby color leads to aromas of blackberry and forest
On the palate: Delicately sweet and earthy, deep strawberry notes, well-integrated tannins, silky
On the plate: Pair with aged cheese, cured meats, grilled pork, potato cassoulet
Our take: This is a very well-balanced Beaujolais, which can pair well with a variety of foods year round.
Fun fact: Some consumers have only had Beaujolais Nouveau, which is a fresh swill that is not representative of the serious wines of Beaujolais. This region is at the foot of the Burgundy region, and many of the winemakers are as serious about their winemaking process as are the Burgundians. While the gamay grape is a bit more fruity than most pinot noir, you can substitute Beaujolais for pinot noir, with many quality bottles available under $20.
