20-Buck Bottle: A cooler climate Aussie shiraz
This bottle is less jammy than its warmer counterparts
Kilikanoon, Killerman’s Run 2017 Shiraz
Available at: winestore, all locations
Price: $14.99
On the nose: Fresh cherry with pepper, cinnamon and plum.
On the palate: Very balanced with good acidity, medium body, and well integrated alcohol. Medium finish.
On the plate: This wine would pair well with grilled eggplant and pork skewers, roasted root veggies, or polenta with wilted greens.
Our take: Australian Shiraz have been coming in at 15 to 16 percent alcohol for a number of years due to the many seasons of drought and high temperatures in South Australia. I mostly stopped drinking them as I like my jam in a spreadable form, not in a glass. This wine from the cooler region of Clare Valley has a shorter finish and more subtle fruit, which makes it more versatile and less jammy. Drink now.
Fun fact: Mr. Killerman lived in a hand built hut behind the Kilikanoon Winery and was self-sufficient, growing his own produce and hunting for protein — rabbits, squirrels, and birds. This wine is named after him, as his influence on Kilikanoon’s founder, Mort Mitchell, was profound and lasting. —Anita Skogland
