The Cocktailery to add retail wine

The move was spurred by customer demand

South End boutique The Cocktailery, an Atherton Mill shop hosting cocktail classes and selling wares and supplies for beverage enthusiasts, is expanding beyond the cocktail and mocktail market to add retail wines.

Owner Tamu Curtis says she made the decision to bring in wine is due to customer demand, and she is finally to a point with staffing where she has been able to organize the new retail arm. With several mixologists focusing on leading the cocktail classes, Curtis has been tasting and researching wines to determine what she’ll bring in.

“People came in and they were asking for wine, do I sell wine, do I sell wine glasses?,” she said. “So with selling wine, I’ll also open up more retail to sell wine accessories, glassware, openers, cheese boards, those kind of things.”

The Cocktailery will also begin selling wines by the glass, with the current bitters bar being adjusted to also have room to display the bottles featured that day, and guests can enjoy them while browsing the store or sitting in the lounge area. Each bottle will be available to purchase at retail. Wine tastings, led by local wine professionals, will also be added to The Cocktailery’s class rotation. Curtis is hoping to have wines for sale ahead of Thanksgiving celebrations, with a selection focused on the areas she likes to drink from: California and Oregon, with a selection of orange wines as well.

As it expands into the wine world, the Cocktailery is also celebrating its first anniversary.

“I’ve always billed The Cocktailery as a cocktail supply and beverage lifestyle shop — when we talk about beverages, it’s not just only cocktails,” Curtis says. “Mocktails are a big thing that I like to push at The Cocktailery; we have a huge selection of zero proof beverages. And then wine is kind of a natural fit. I drink a lot of wine. I don’t like go out and drink cocktails every night. When I come home, I have a glass of wine, so for me, it’s a full, rounded experience.”
