Indoor mini golf course and craft bar Stroke has closed its doors in Plaza Midwood. According to owner Scott Gadd, the closure was a result of debt from the closure of sister concept The Royal Tot. The Royal Tot, a tiki bar in the Belmont neighborhood, closed last spring before reopening under new ownership. Following the closure, Gadd says, the restaurant group attempted to renegotiate terms with lenders but was unsuccessful in doing so.
“Stroke wasn’t in a position to cover the debt for the two places and unfortunately was the collateral for the majority of it,” Gadd says.
Stroke opened its doors in January 2020 on Pecan Avenue, and served craft cocktails and food as well as housed a nine-hole putt-putt course. The golf course often took on holiday themes, such as Halloween and Christmas.
Following Stroke’s closure, Gadd will shift focus to The Ice Trade, a craft ice company currently located in LoSo. The Ice Trade supplies several restaurants and bars around town with ice, as well as to home cocktail enthusiasts. Because The Ice Trade was separate from The Royal Tot and Stroke, the business remains unaffected by the restaurant group’s debt. In fact, expansion is in the works so The Ice Trade can meet the increasing demand for its products.
“We’re finalizing a lease to move to a space 3x the current size so we can expand and grow,” Gadd says. “Ice sculptures are going to be a big focus going forward to expand our offerings.”
