Soul Food Sessions, Carolina Farm Trust hosting a dinner
The event will include a screening and discussion of food access
Local nonprofit Carolina Farm Trust’s documentary series, The Farmer That Feeds Us, returns on Sunday with a look at Charlotte’s west side and food access. A trailer for the series discusses the area’s high poverty rates and lack of healthy dining options, and what’s being done to help address the dire need for healthy food.
Sunday’s event, a fundraiser for Carolina Farm Trust, will be held at 7th Street Public Market. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., with the documentary screening starting at 6 p.m. Dinner will be followed by a panel discussion.
The meal will be cooked by chefs of the nonprofit Soul Food Sessions, which focuses on increasing the visibility of minority chefs in Charlotte. They’ll be serving roasted apple barbecue chicken, smoked pork loin with herb glaze and smoked lemons, dirty grits, a roasted corn and mixed greens salad, and sweet potato galette with caramel sauce for dessert.
The panel discussion will center around food access and security, gentrification, and diversity. Following the discussion will be a Q&A with audience members. Charlotte Center City Partners’ Alysia Osborne will moderate the panel, with guests Elliott Royal (Mecklenburg County), chef Greg Collier, city planner Cherie Jzar, chef Michael Bowling, real estate agent Rashad Davis, and farmer Paul Brewington on the panel.
Tickets are $75 and can be purchased here. See the trailer for the documentary below. —Kristen Wile
