Single barrel select tequilas hit Charlotte
Two local bars have purchased exclusive bottles

Exclusive single barrel bourbons have been popular in town for a while now, with several bars, hotels, and restaurants purchasing an entire barrel from a distillery. (Find a list of those here.) Two of the city’s most innovative bars have added a new exclusive bottle to their shelves: personal selections of tequila.
At Dot Dot Dot, owner Stefan Huebner is serving a personal select tequila from a Dot Dot Dot barrel of El Tesoro. The reposado is pouring for $12 for 1.5-ounce pour or $16 for a 2.5-ounce pour. I’m not a tequila aficionado, so I asked Huebner for tasting notes. The tequila, he says, has a heavy roasted agave note, with hints of sweet citrus and cinnamon and a long, smooth finish.
Haberdish’s Colleen Hughes also has nabbed a single barrel selection, which should be available at the bar Thursday. Their barrel, too, is El Tesoro reposado, aged nine months in bourbon barrels. On the nose, the Haberdish barrel has a minerality to it, as well as hints of fruit and baking spices. On the palate, you get a little spice, minerals, oak, and coffee. Pours will be $9 for one ounce, and will also be used in a cocktail called “The Dangerous One,” a nod to how smooth the spirit is. The cocktail will be made with a persimmon, ceylon cinnamon, and ginger reduction, a touch of amaretto and honey, and topped with a clarified lemon and goat cheese foam with raspberry powder. We’ll be trying that ASAP.
The two single barrels offer spirit enthusiasts a rare opportunity to bar-hop and compare two expressions from El Tesoro. It’s also an expensive effort for the bars; each barrel produces around 40 cases, and the bar has to buy them all, plus pay for the ABC tax stamp on each bottle. Haberdish’s barrel, for example, cost the restaurant group more than $14,000. They’ll end up with 240 bottles of tequila.
