Q&A: Ice cream shops, the next UP event, Winston-Salem
Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte – and beyond
Q: It’s warming up. What are your favorite ice cream shops so I can beat the heat?
Tom: I am a huge fan of Cold Hearted Gelato in Plaza Midwood. Elinn Hesse is a true genius at combining unique flavors. Her menu changes a lot so there’s always something new and exciting. She just rolled out a chocolate honey and banana caramel I can’t wait to try. Two Scoops Creamery is also a home run with an almost encyclopedic list of fun and delicious flavors. And if I’m to be really honest, I can never resist a pineapple sundae at Dairy Queen.
Q: I loved the Rosemont preview dinner. What’s the next Unpretentious Palate event?
Tom: We have a couple UP special events coming up very soon. I wish I could tell you now, but that would ruin the surprise. They’re really good. Stay tuned.
Q: I’m heading up to Winston-Salem for a few days. Any recommendations?
Tom: Indeed! Check out what chef Travis Myers is doing at Six Hundredº. The former NCRLA Chef of the Year has a southern soul and an international vision. Tim Grandinetti’s Spring House Restaurant, Kitchen, & Bar just celebrated its tenth anniversary. The menu is upstate New York meets downhome South, with a few other surprises thrown in. And go hungry. Chef Tim doesn’t do “little food.”
