Graham St. ABC store reopens to the public

The store underwent a significant renovation

Editor’s note: The original opening date of the store was Sept. 4 at 10 a.m., but that date has been pushed back to Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. This story has been updated to reflect the new date.

The Graham Street ABC Store will reopen on Wednesday with a serious facelift. The store, located near Camp North End just outside of Uptown, was the oldest store in operation before the renovation, and by some measures still is — the concrete slab in the back of the store remains the original.

“It was our oldest store, and it looked it,” says Michael Tully, Chief Financial Officer of Meck ABC. “It was dated, and with all the revitalization that is going on in this corridor, the North End project over on Statesville, we needed to have a more modern store to fit in and be part of the community that’s coming around us.”

The new store will serve its first return customers at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9. ABC Stores have returned to normal operating hours, but are limited to 10 customers at a time. We recently covered how the ABC system is handling Covid-19 cases among staff members.

According to Operations Director Alicia Collins, the Graham Street store’s customers favor gin, but the tequila is also trending, providing two areas of focus in the spirits selection. The store will also feature TV screens that share information on spirits from brands, as well as share resources around addiction and substance abuse from ABC’s non-profit partners.

The most recent store opening in Huntersville brought lines of folks seeking allocated bourbons starting around midnight the night before opening. Collins says they’ve been more quiet than usual about this opening, downplaying it to help prevent lines where customers may not follow social distancing regulations.

The new store also has a large space for mixed beverage clients, and staff expects to become a pick-up location for more Uptown restaurants thanks to the improved location.
