Adam and Ellen Duke, owners of local company Dukes Bread, will join the lineup of teachers at Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen, a popular cooking classroom and brunch spot in lower South End.

Alyssa Wilen, chef and co-owner of Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen with her husband, Andrew, is the face of the company, which expanded from a small space inside of Atherton Market to a large space in the Bowers development near Brewers at Yancey last summer. Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen teaches classes centered around cuisines or seasons, using all local products, and guests learn to cook a meal that they enjoy at the end of class. They also return home with improved cooking techniques.

Ellen Duke, who teaches at Johnson & Wales, will focus on pastry classes, and will teach one class a month. Adam Duke will teach bread classes.

“We get requests for specific classes a lot, and while we incorporate baking, pastry, and bread into our regular classes, we wanted to bring in an expert primarily for bread and have that class expand what we already offer,” Alyssa Wilen says. “Especially being in that new space, we’re doing that with a lot of different categories.”

Ellen’s first class will focus on French pastries, while Adam’s debut will be a pizza wars class discussing different styles of pizza and how to make them. Both will begin in late spring, with the dates being released in the next newsletter from CAK (sign up for that here). Adam will also do a class focusing on different breads, such as sourdough, brioche, and flatbreads, and discuss bread basics, like working with yeast. —Kristen Wile
