    Q&A: Margaritas and Michelin stars

Each week, we answer reader questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: What’s the best place for unique margaritas?
Kristen: A margarita is a great choice on a hot day, and we’ve got plenty of those! If you’re looking for some great margarita menus, check out RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila or Paco’s Tacos & Tequila. You ask this question on a great day — today also kicks off Strawberry Margarita Week at the Strawberry Hill location of Superica. The strawberry frozen margarita from chef/co-owner Ford Fry’s cookbook will be on the menu today through Sunday.

Q: With Michelin in Atlanta, which restaurants in Charlotte could get one?
Kristen: This actually surprised me a bit. If you asked me a few months ago, I would have said we won’t see Michelin in Charlotte in my lifetime. However, I’m wondering if Michelin is looking to increase its relevance and expand its awareness by spreading to smaller cities. If that’s the case, maybe it will happen sooner than I’d have expected. Michelin is now judging its stars on these criteria:

    1) quality products
    2) the harmony of flavors
    3) the mastery of cooking techniques
    4) the voice and personality of the chef reflected in the cuisine
    5) consistency between each visit and throughout the menu (each restaurant is inspected several times a year)

I’m still not sure we’ll see it in our lifetime, but if Michelin came to Charlotte, based on this criteria I’d guess their stars would go to Barrington’s, Kindred, and Counter-, as well as Bardo if it reopens.

Q: Tell me more about the North Carolina Wine Academy!
Kristen: Sure! It’s an education company based out of Asheville run by a WSET level 3 wine professional, Mary Montalvo. She holds classes for both professionals and wine enthusiasts, as well as consults on wine programs. They also host events in Charlotte, such as tonight’s Bastille Day tasting and an upcoming cellaring class, off Park Road. There are also a few virtual options!
