    Q&A: Molecular gastronomy, Southern Pecan

Each week, we answer your questions about food and drink in Charlotte

Q: Have you been to Southern Pecan? Would you recommend it?
Kristen: We’ve posted Opening Thoughts on Southern Pecan just for you! I enjoyed my meal there, but it’s not the kind of place I’d plan a date night for. Southern Pecan is locally owned, from the same mind behind Cafe Monte, and casual. It’s affordable — surprisingly so, given that it’s in Phillips Place in SouthPark — and the food is solid. It’s a restaurant I can see myself securing a reservation at when I’ve got a large family party of all ages and tastes. I did really enjoy the fried catfish, though. Read our early review here.

Q: Are there any restaurants in Charlotte practicing molecular gastronomy? I’m fascinated by that trend and would like to check it out in person. Where can I go?
Kristen: I think Counter- is going to be the best place for you. The multi-course tasting paired with music is one of the city’s most modern (technique-wise) menus. While there are no restaurants that feature menus as crazy as Alinea, you’ll find touches of molecular gastronomy — foams and powders — at The Stanley and Bardo, another tasting menu concept.
