20-Buck Bottle: A rich, full-bodied Italian red
A more affordable alternative to a Rhône red
by Anita Skogland
2016 Tenuta Regaleali Lamuri Nero D’Avola Sicily DOC, Italy
Available at: Foxcroft Wine Co., Waverly
Price: $26.99
On the Nose: Tobacco, blackberry, plum, cherry, rosemary
On the Palate: Full body, balanced acidity and tannin, juicy with good structure
On the Plate: Pair with roast meats and vegetables, hearty red sauce pasta, veal
Our Take: A very good pour from a solid producer. A similar Rhône or California wine of this quality would be $40.
Fun Fact: The Regaleali Estate has been owned by the Tasca family since 1830. It was once a general agriculture farm of 1,500 acres. After World War II, the family converted much of the land to vineyards. They now grow eight different grapes on six hills that range in altitude from 1,200 to 2,400 feet in altitude. The Tasca family produced the first single vineyard wine in Sicily.
