20-Buck Bottle: A Basque rosé with integrated flavors
Unique grape results in a elegant and well-balanced wine
by Anita Skogland
2023 Bodegas Rezabal Getariako Txakolina Rosé, DO Pyrenees, Spain
Available at: Bond Street Wines, Myers Park
Price: $23.99
On the Nose: Raspberry, strawberry, hint of mint and saline, crisp and refreshing
On the Palate: Well-integrated acidity with rich berry, cherry, and melon flavors; medium body, minerality
On the Plate: Shrimp, paella, fish, roast chicken, hearty salads with beans and asparagus, frittata, pea risotto
Our Take: This rosé is a little more than our $20 cap, but worth every extra penny. It is elegant and well-balanced. It is a serious food wine.
Fun Facts: The grape used to make this rosé is Hondarrabi Beltza. The Pyrenees Mountains are somewhat isolated from Spain and France due to their very craggy construction. Over many centuries, the region has developed its own grapes, language, and culture that is distinctly different from the surrounding countries. The Basque region fought with Spain and France for 52 years, until 2011. Even though they were given autonomy in 1979, they continued to fight for complete independence. The cessation of hostilities has allowed for more availability of their wines in the U.S.
